The Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra (BIPO) launches its 2025/26 season under the baton of Carlo Tenan, joined by pianist Ilya Maximov in a performance of exceptional artistry. Maximov, who made his concerto debut at the age of just eight with the Yekaterinburg Philharmonic Orchestra, pursued his studies at the Gnessin Music Institute in Moscow, the Liceu Conservatory in Barcelona, and later at the Royal College of Music in London with Dmitry Alexeev. He has been a prize-winner at prestigious competitions including the G.B. Viotti International Piano Competition, Maria Canals and Hilton Head, and has performed with leading ensembles such as the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, the Orchestra of Teatro Carlo Felice and the Wuhan Symphony Orchestra.

The work with which the orchestra and its audience will together celebrate the opening is Five Songs from Shkodër, commissioned by BIPO. Its composer, Paolo Marzocchi, despite his classical training, consistently displays an experimental and versatile approach to music, producing works across theatre, cinema, radio, and “pure” composition. His catalogue includes piano, chamber and orchestral works created in collaboration with such acclaimed institutions as the Lucerne Festival, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Teatro La Fenice in Venice, the Rome Opera House, the Venice Biennale and the Toscanini Philharmonic Orchestra. According to the composer’s message to BIPO’s audience ahead of the world premiere, Five Songs from Shkodër seeks to unite the traditions of Turkish music with those of Southern Europe, promising to win the hearts of listeners.
