“Beyond doubt this album is one of the most impressive releases from Dutch soil in a long time... Ruins and Remains is a masterpiece.”
—Dick Hovenga, Written in Music (NL)

Ruins and Remains, a suite for piano, string quartet and percussion, was composed by Wolfert Breferode in 2018, to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Over time, however, it has come to embody meanings broader and more personal, with wide-ranging resonances. “At a number of levels, the piece has to do with grief and loss and learning to stand up again,” Dutch pianist and composer Brederode says. For this special performance, Brederode, Lijbaart, and one of the Netherlands' most adventurous string quartets, the Matangi Quartet, will join us on the evening of April 25.

Joost Lijbaart, a percussionist with a wide range of interests, has performed in over 90 countries and has appeared at numerous major jazz festivals. Lijbaart is involved in various projects and collaborations, including his quartet Group of Friends, his duo with pianist Wolfert Brederode, the group Batik, and his newly formed improvisational trio with vocalist Sanne Rambags and guitarist Bram Stadhouders.
