SENYAWA
The first guest of the 39th Nova Muzak is the Indonesian duo Senyawa, brought to life by vocalist Rully Shabara and instrumentalist Wukir Suryadi. Over the past decade, they have captivated audiences worldwide with their unique sound and volcanic live performances, which are 90% composed yet infused with improvisation.
Pursuing a musical language that merges traditional music with contemporary aesthetics and goes beyond a simple East-West synthesis, Senyawa’s sound has allowed them to collaborate and record with so many musicians from diverse musical traditions across the globe. Among these artists are Keiji Haino, Arrington De Dionysus, KK Null, Stepheon O’Malley, Melt Banana, David Shea and Damo Suzuki.
Their albums have repeatedly made it onto prestigious “Albums of the Year” lists. Their latest studio album, “Vajranala”, released in 2024, received the same acclaim and recognition. Performing in Türkiye for the first time, Senyawa is set to leave a lasting impression with an unforgettable show that will deeply move music lovers.
POIL UEDA
PoiL Ueda is a project born in 2020 from the collaboration between Japanese vocalist and satsuma-biwa artist Junko Ueda and the French avant-rock band PoiL. In 2023, they released two albums. Since their founding in 2008, the Lyon-based Poil (bass/drums/keyboards), which has defied all musical boundaries and restrictions, had already released four studio albums before collaborating with Juno Ueda.
Known for their electrifying live performances, this trio blends wild intensity with virtuosity, their music oscillating between the raw energy of punk, the purity of contemporary chamber music, and the relentless turbulence of a factory on the brink of eruption. Rooted in ancient Japanese traditional music and infused with an innovative avant-rock sensibility, the project PoiL Ueda brings together Junko's traditional and epic vocal style -accompanied by the satsuma-biwa- and the sacred resonance of Buddhist Shōmyō chants.
The free-spirited and experimental rock textures of PoiL Ueda intertwine with Junko Ueda's smooth, agile voice, evocative storytelling, and striking charisma. The result is a groundbreaking performance that offers audiences a chance to explore a singular and immersive musical universe.
